Office for Civil RightsLink: http://www.ed.gov/offices/OCR/ The Office for Civil Rights is the main governmental office for the enforcement of Civil Rights laws, such as those that protect us against discrimination based on race, national origin (commonly understood as language) and sex. They have the power to withhold funds to schools and school districts who do not comply with Civil Rights laws, although to date they have not withhold funds from any violator. State Department of Education uses to have Title IV offices that helped schools stay in compliance with Civil Rights laws, but these offices were closed in the mid-1990s. Regional Equity Assistance Centers still provide training and resources. Information and assistance with discrimination issues may also be obtained through regional OCR offices. See the Reading Room for many online publications about discrimination on schools. The OCR site also has a pamphlet on how to file a discrimination case, race harassment resources, and a FAQ list. Many summaries of relevant court decisions and self-evaluation guidelines for schools and school districts are available.
